Overview

Monobutyltin Oxide is an amorphous white solid used primarily as an esterification and polycondensation catalyst. It is hydrolytically stable and performs efficiently at reaction temperatures between 210°C–240°C (stable up to 250°C), making it well suited for demanding polyester resin production.

Applications

  • Catalyst for saturated polyester resins (powder coatings, coil coatings)
  • Catalyst for unsaturated polyester resins (gel coat, sheet molding compounds, cast molding)
  • Production of polymeric plasticizers
  • Phase-transfer catalysis in polycondensation reactions

Key Benefits

  • Solubilizes into the carboxylic acid reaction mixture at ~80°C and integrates into the final product without affecting quality
  • No neutralization or filtration step required post-reaction
  • Shortens esterification cycle times and reduces energy consumption through lower required reaction temperatures
